The Top 3 Benefits of Hiring a Local Handyman

You might just be pleasantly surprised!

1. Free quotes. Low call out charges

It’s unlikely you can call away a specialist tradesman from an onsite commercial job, as building projects are very time and cost conscious. Call-out fees can be between £70 and £90, with the additional cost of the actual job and materials. Emergency plumbers/electricians can have call out charges up to £150 per hour. Getting free space in their diary can be even trickier. Working with a local Handyman is generally a much simpler process, as they are geared up to work exclusively in your local area. Popping in to give a quick quote on the way back from another job is a normal occurence. Therefore quotes are generally free and small jobs can cost a lot less at anywhere between £20 and £30 per hour. Your local Handyman is generally a self-employed sole trader, so their time and costs are much more flexible.

2. Multiple jobs done in the same visit

Your local Handyman is generally set up to be able to work on a variety of different trades (i.e. carpentry, electrics, painting etc.) and tend to have all the correct tools for those jobs in their van. Many times we visit customers for half a day to clear up a ‘snagging list’ of minor jobs that have been bothering you for a while. This can be adding an extra mains socket, replacing a ceiling light fitting, fixing a broken shelf or cabinet, or putting up heavy mirrors and pictures safely and securely. Getting all those jobs done in one visit ends up saving the customer hundreds of pounds in ongoing call out charges. If you have a snagging list (we all do), give your local handyman a call today!

3. You won't have all the right tools!

Even if you’re a keen DIY-er, it’s unlikely you will have all the correct tools needed for every job around the home. To give a few examples, to replace a kitchen tap you will need the correct size box spanner, and the ability to turn it from around two feet below the sink (it’s a really fiddly job even with the right tools) To hang a cabinet or shelf on top of a tiled surface like the bathroom or kitchen, you will need a Carbide-tipped drill bit, and waterproof tape to put over the drill point. Drilling too fast or with the wrong tools will result in a cracked tile, which will turn into a bigger job (especially if you don’t have any tiles left over!) Worst of all, even keen DIY-ers need to be very careful drilling holes into walls. You will need a specialist stud /metal joist finder and electrical current detector to make sure you don’t drill directly into a water pipe, or an electrical cable. These can end up being some of the most difficult and messy jobs to repair when they go wrong.
Quite simply, if in doubt, DON’T DO IT, and call your local handyman instead!
